I meant to do my work today— But a brown bird sang in the apple tree, And a butterfly flitted across the field, And all the leaves were calling me. And the wind went sighing over the land, Tossing the grasses to and fro, And a rainbow held out its shining hand— So what could I do but laugh and go? - Richard Le Gallienne (1892)
SUMMER WINDIt is a sultry day; the sun has drunk The dew that lay upon the morning grass; There is no rustling in the lofty elm That canopies my dwelling, and its shade Scarce cools me. All is silent, save the faint And interrupted murmur of the bee, Settling on the sick flow-ers, and then again Instantly on the wing. The plants around Feel the too potent fervors: the tall maize Rolls up its long green leaves; the clover droops Its tender foliage, and declines its blooms. But far in the fierce sunshine tower the hills, With all their growth of woods, silent and stern, As if the scorching heat and dazzling light Were but an element they loved. Bright clouds, Motionless pillars of the brazen heaven– Their bases on the mountains– their white tops Shining in the far ether– fire the air With a reflected radiance, and make turn The gazer’s eye away. For me, I lie Languidly in the shade, where the thick turf, Yet virgin from the kisses of the sun, Retains some freshness, and I woo the wind_ That still delays his coming. Why so slow, Gentle and voluble spirit of_ the air? Oh, come and breathe_ upon_ the fainting earth_ Coolness and life! Is it that in his caves He hears me? See, on yonder woody ridge, The pine is bending his proud top, and now Among the nearer groves, chestnut and oak Are tossing their green boughs about. He_ comes; Lo, where the grassy meadow runs in waves! The deep distressful silence of the scene Breaks up with mingling of unnumbered sounds And universal motion. He is come, Shak-ing a shower of blossoms from the shrubs, And bearing on their fragrance; and he brings Music of birds, and rustling of young boughs, And sound of swaying branches, and the voice Of distant waterfalls. All the green herbs Are stirring in his breath; a thousand flowers, By the road-side and the borders of the brook, Nod gayly to each other; glossy leaves Are twinkling in the sun, as if the dew Were on them yet, and silver waters break Into small waves and sparkle as he comes. --WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT (1794-1878)
SEPTEMBERThe sultry sum-mer past, Septem-ber comes, Soft twilight of the slow declining year. All mildness, soothing loneliness, and peace; The fading season ere the falling come, More sober than the bux-om, blooming May, And therefore less the favourite of the world, But dearest month_ of all to pen-sive minds, T'is now far spent; and the meridian sun, Most sweetly smiling with attemper'd beams, Sheds gently down a mild_ and grateful warmth. Beneath its yellow lustre, groves and woods, Checker'd by one night's frost with various hues, While yet no wind has swept a leaf away, Shine doubly rich. It were a sad delight Down the smooth stream to glide, and see it tinged Upon each brink with all the gorgeous hues, The yellow, red or purple of the trees That singly, or in tufts, or forests thick Adorn the shores; to see, perhaps, the side Of some high mount reflected far below, With its bright colours, intermix'd with spots Of darker green. Yes, it were sweetly sad To wander in the open fields, and hear, E'en at this hour, the noonday hardly past, The lulling insects of the summer's night; To hear, where late-ly buzzing swarms were heard, A lonely bee long rov-ing here and there To find a single flower, but all in vain; Then rising quick, and with a louder hum, In widening circles round and round his head, Straight by the listener flying clear away, As if to bid the fields a last adieu; [The sultry sum-mer past, Septem-ber comes, Soft twilight of the slow declining year.] To hear, within the woodland's sunny side Late full of music, nothing save, perhaps, The sound of nutshells, by the squirrel dropp'd From some tall beech, fast fall-ing through the leaves. [The sultry sum-mer past, September comes] - CARLOS WILCOX (1794-1827)
IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTERIn the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day, Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels fall before, The ox and ass and camel which adore. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; But His mother only, in her maiden bliss, Worshipped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart. - CHRISTINA ROSSETTI (1872)

- 1. FOR MATTHEW (in memory of Matthew Shepard)
For Matthew (Lament & Prayer) Lament Wyoming stars in silent horror cried as Satan's fists struck hard again, then crucified God's gentle child. And there the weeping night in disbelief beheld a broken boy's despair: chilled bones, alone, barefoot and bleeding, swaddled in an icy shroud distilled and crystallized from autumn's tears. O hear the first bird's cry and feel the breaking of his heart to realize his mother's grief. Prayer Why own this fear? Our silence multiplies, condemning us complicit in his pain, complacency our guilty wile. Now pray his suffering might our apathy dispel; let hopeful deeds amend and help atone. No hateful shouts of rage--but let us call aloud for justice, truth, and love, from sorrow's haze. O hear the first bird's cry and heed the waking in our hearts lest death be vain. Rest, Matthew. Peace. ©1998, Ed Lein
Solo Version (High Voice) - 2. ASTRONOMY (Song for Maureen)
Astronomy (Song for Maureen) There's Jupiter ... It's like five million miles away, but textbooks never mention "up" --I guess 'cause everything is relative. I'll bet it's lonely there. I know it's lonely here without her. I'm wondering, how far away is heaven? Some say it's just beyond those stars... --I guess a song won't have the answer, but I bet it's lovely there. I know it's lonely here. And if home is where the heart is, well, then mine's beyond those stars, a million broken pieces out of reach. I'm wondering if there's a God in heaven, and can He turn this night to dawn? I know a song can't hold the answer, but she won't be lonely there. But god, it's lonely here ... And if home is where the heart is, well, then mine's beyond those stars, a million broken pieces out of reach. Now I'm wondering, how far away is heaven? Some say it's just beyond those stars. I know a song can't hold the answer, but you won't be lonely there. God knows, it's lonely here, so lonely. It's lonely here without you. ©2005, Ed Lein

Come, my soul, thou must be waking; Now is breaking o'er the earth another day; Come to Him who made this splendor; See thou render all thy feeble strength can pay. Gladly hail the sun returning; Ready burning be the incense of thy powers; For the night is safely ended; God hath tended with His care thy helpless hours. Pray that He may prosper ever Each endeavor, when thine aim is good and true; But that He may ever thwart thee, And convert thee, When thou evil wouldst pursue. Mayest thou on life's last morrow, Free from sorrow pass away in slumber sweet; And, released from death's dark sadness Rise in gladness, that far brighter sun to greet. Only God's free gifts abuse not, Light refuse not, but His Spirit's voice obey; Thou with Him shalt dwell, beholding Light enfolding all things in unclouded day. UNDER THE HARVEST MOON (1916) Under the harvest moon, When the soft silver Drips shimmering Over the garden nights, Death, the gray mocker, Comes and whispers to you As a beautiful friend Who remembers. Under the summer roses When the flagrant crimson Lurks in the dusk Of the wild red leaves, Love, with little hands, Comes and touches you With a thousand memories, And asks you Beautiful, unanswerable questions. Musical setting dedicated to Jeff Driggers
- Valley Song (dedicated to Dr. Carole Clifford)
VALLEY SONG (1918)
YOUR eyes and the valley are memories. Your eyes_ fire and the valley a bowl. It was here a moonrise crept over the timberline. It was here we turned the coffee cups upside down. And your eyes and the moon swept the valley. I will see you again to-morrow. I will see you again in a million years. I will never know your dark eyes again. These are three ghosts I keep. These are three sumach red dogs I run with. [Repeat 1st stanza] All of it wraps and knots to a riddle: I have the moon, the timberline, and you. All three are gone - and I keep all three. Musical setting dedicated to Dr. Carole Clifford
- At a Window (dedicated to Dale Hudson)
AT A WINDOW (1914) Give me hunger, O you gods that sit and give The world its orders. Give me hunger, pain and want, Shut me out with shame and failure From your doors of gold and fame, Give me your shabbiest, weariest hunger! [Repeat 1st stanza] But leave me a little * love, A voice to speak to me in the day end, A hand to touch me in the dark room Breaking the long_ loneliness. In the dusk of day-shapes Blurring the sunset, One little wandering, western star Thrust out from the changing shores of shadow. Let me go to the window, Watch there the day-shapes of dusk And wait and know the coming Of a little [repeat from*] love. Musical setting dedicated to Dale Hudson
- The Great Hunt (dedicated to Edward Koehler)
THE GREAT HUNT (1916) I CANNOT tell you now; When the wind’s drive and whirl Blow me along no longer, And the wind’s a whisper at last— Maybe I’ll tell you then— some other time. When the rose’s flash to the sunset Reels to the rack and the twist, And the rose is a red bygone, When the face I love is going And the gate to the end shall clang, And it’s no use to beckon or say, “So long”— Maybe I’ll tell you then— some other time. I never knew any more beautiful than you: I have hunted you under my thoughts, I have broken down under the wind And into the roses looking for you. I shall never find any greater than you.
